Disaster Services
After a Storm
JFS's role after a local disaster is to assist those who are impacted with long-term recovery case management. Partnering with other community groups who offer rescue and early stage relief, those who need more longer-term assistance can then work with JFS to navigate the journey to stabilization and recovery.
Experience has shown that there is typically a three to five year recovery for families whose lives were turned upside down by this type of event. JFS reminds those impacted that even after a family is resettled and furniture is replaced, family relationships, financial stability and a sense of personal security may still need to be addressed to complete a full recovery.
Case management services are underwritten by United Way of Greater Houston, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston.
Disaster Recovery Services Offered:
- Providing case management to navigate families from recovery to resettlement
- Providing resources to locate temporary or long-term housing, furnishings and other immediate needs
- Providing immediate short-term financial aid
- Navigation of FEMA application and insurance benefits
- Providing access to volunteers to clients to help with packing and unpacking, cleaning, sorting through items, documenting losses
- Coordinating with local and national volunteer groups to "muck out" homes
- Providing counseling and support group services for children and adults
- Assist our clients (who have completed the intake process) with resources to get into temporary or long-term housing
- Assist our clients with resources/donations/discounted furnishings to make their current living conditions more comfortable

During the current COVID-19 crisis, JFS is providing the following assistance to our clients and the community:
Our Behavioral & Mental Health Services Team is providing Telehealth through phone calls and video conferencing. If you are an existing client, you can make an appointment by reaching out to your counselor. If you aren't a current client, please complete our online intake form: https://old.jfshouston.org/client_referral_form.php
We are also currently offering FREE internet support sessions via our HIPAA compliant Zoom Conference Calls account Monday through Friday. These one-hour support sessions are designed to provide a safe and supportive virtual environment for participants to connect, learn, comfort, support and socialize to promote our psychological health during this stressful time. All sessions are being facilitated by a rotation of licensed clinicians or master's level clinical intern students under supervision. Registration is required to participate in a session and each session will close access 15 minutes after the start time. To register for a session, please go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JFSHoustonSupport
Our Case Management Team has been reaching out to our senior clients & Holocaust Survivors to make sure that they have food and medicines and that they are not ill or in need of anything that we can provide for them. Their stability is the most precarious as many of them cannot get to the stores for the items they need and many of the caregiving teams may have been disrupted. If you are feeling isolated or are experiencing food insecurity as a result of COVID-19, please contact a Case Manager (disastercasemanagement@jfshouston.org or call 713-986-7859 or 713-986-7839; Spanish speakers should call 903-265-9573). Should you know of a community member who is in need, please share this information with them and suggest that they reach out. We may not have the direct resources, but we may have a connection that does!
Should you have a Facebook account, please follow our page (https://www.facebook.com/JFSHouston/) for updates and resources.
Should you be interested in helping our clients. JFS maintains a small pantry to supply our clients with basic foods and necessities. If you'd like to participate in this show of support, we are collecting the following items (or see our Amazon Wish List):
- Coloring books appropriate for seniors
- Colored pencils or crayons
- Crossword puzzle, sudoku or word search books (large print)
- Canned goods or shelf stable items: pasta, rice, cereal, peanut butter, tuna fish, protein bars, crackers, boxed milk. (Kosher, low sodium, and low sugar/sugar free items are preferred, when available.)
- Cleaning supplies: small/medium size laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, hand/body soap, shampoo, and all-purpose cleaners
- Paper goods: Toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates & cups, plastic cutlery
- Gift cards for online grocery purchasing for Walmart, Target, or Amazon ($25 or above) to purchase items for our clients that can be delivered directly to their homes.
- Grocery store gift cards to supplement our supply and assist us with the higher need.
- Washable Face Masks, double layer with elastic.
If you would like to contribute any of these items in person, we have a no contact drop-off bin at our office (4131 S Braeswood, entrance on Linkwood). Please contact our Case Manager of the Day (713-667-9336) to confirm that someone will be on property and able to take in the donation. The bin will be on the bench in front of Celebration Company (under the portico).
Are you hiring? Contact Laura Alter (lalter@jfshouston.org) with information about your needs and she will get the word out to our clients that are looking for employment!
Don't have many funds or much time available but still want to make a difference? Simply reach out to someone you haven't spoken with in a while and just say "Hi!" Let them know that they too can make a difference by doing the same. Should they be looking for resources or opportunities, please refer them to our website or suggest they follow us on Facebook. If you feel that they might benefit from talking to some experts, please remember to share our support group information (listed on our home page). We would also love for you to show your support for JFS by using our hashtag (#JFSisHere)in your social media posts. Thank you for recognizing that NOW is the time to make a difference.
