Project Shalom

Porject Shalom was created in 1996 and is now part of the disability services at JFS. It is designed to offer adults with ongoing mental health needs the opportunity to participate in a creative group experience aimed at promoting social skills, enhancing self confidence, decreasing isolation, and providing a greater sense of connection and involvement with the Jewish community. Group participants meet once weekly for two hours and are provided a hot kosher lunch. Activities are structured and include arts and craft projects, jewlery making, musical presentations, story telling, as well as frequent visits to museum, musical and theatre performances and more. The group also has a role within the larger Jewish community such as active participation in Yom Limmud where group members sell products of their creative projects to raise funds for and an awareness of the program. Group members also participate in Jewish holiday celebrations such as Rosh Hashana, Passover, Chanukha, and Purim. Individual and family counseling is provided to group members. Monthly medication management is provided by a community nurse.

The group is led by an experienced therapist and is free and open to new members
